Issued by Hood College

Badge Description

The Mathematical Modeling for Teaching badge focuses on understanding and implementing the steps of the mathematical modeling process, creating mathematical models to describe physical situations and using models to make predictions about those situations. It provides an introduction to mathematical models such as continuous and discrete, deterministic and stochastic models.

Badge Criteria

This INTERMEDIATE level badge is equivalent to a 3-credit, master's-level course. Earning a grade of B or better is required for this badge.

1. Gain appreciation for mathematical modeling as an approach to gaining understanding of real-world issues, current events, problems and questions of all kinds. 2. Create models with attention to units, dependent and independent variables, and informally analyze parameter sensitivity. 3. Analyze the cyclical process of mathematical modeling. 4. Recognize that the modeling process requires careful analysis of model assumptions and revision. 5. Collect and use real data for model parameterization and validation, and develop a deep understanding of parameter fitting algorithms. 6. Create models using a variety of both standard continuous and discrete modeling techniques. 7. Complete a self-chosen modeling project. 8. Write a mathematical modeling report that communicates the results of the modeling process using precise mathematical language. 9. Understand Common Core State Standards and Maryland College and Career Ready Standards relevant to Mathematical Modeling.
