Badge Description

The Philosophical Research, Methods and Theory badge introduces learners to the study of philosophy and religious studies at the graduate level through reflection on the central objectives and methodologies that shape scholarship in those fields. Learners will engage with various authors, texts and concepts designed to enhance their understanding of and ability to engage in rigorous philosophical inquiry. Through discussions of various scholarly positions and perspectives, learners will develop critical tools for evaluating philosophical arguments and conducting original research. The badge also considers how the study of philosophy and religion can enrich work across and beyond the humanities. By the end of the seminar, learners will be prepared to critically engage with philosophical and religious ideas and to apply them to their unique scholarly interests, gaining insight into how philosophical and religious thinking inform diverse fields, such as literature, political science, the arts and cultural studies.

Badge Criteria

This FOUNDATIONAL level badge is equivalent to a 3-credit, master’s-level course. A final grade of B or better is required to earn this badge.

1. Synthesize in-depth information from relevant primary and secondary sources representing various points of view. 2. Identify and critically engage in reviewing relevant philosophical and religious scholarship. 3. Develop research skills needed to structure an academic paper and construct a rigorous philosophical argument supported by properly cited evidence from primary and secondary sources. 4. Demonstrate writing skills through drafting a compelling position paper specific to the study of philosophy or religious studies. 5. Develop familiarity with the methodologies of philosophical and religious discourse.
